In the Spring of 1968, planning started for a new Volkswagen dealership located on Dixie Highway. This new business named Neil Huffman Volkswagen, Inc. opened its doors on January 6, 1969 in a snow storm with 16 employees. That first year the dealership sold exactly 1,000 new and used vehicles and employment had increased to 36.
As business increased, a body shop operation was added in 1971. In 1975, a Subaru franchise was added to the business. In 1979, a newly expanded body shop was built on the property adjacent to the dealership. On the first of August, 1979 a Nissan dealership, located on Dutchmans Lane was added to the growing organization. That dealership is now the largest Nissan franchise in Kentucky. With the addition of this second location, combined sales of new and used vehicles in 1981 were 2,100 with employment of about 75 people.
In February 1986, Mazda was added to the business at our Dixie location. Now our sales are approaching 2,500 with employment of 120 people. But Neil was not finished. On December 1, 1989 a Dodge franchise, along with a Chrysler-Plymouth store were purchased on Shelbyville Road. After these facilities were updated and reorganized, Neil again decided to expand in the fall of 1991 by doubling the Body Shop along with many modernizations to the facilities.
In May 1995, after many months of hard work, Neil was able to add Honda Cars of Clarksville and Acura at Oxmoor to his growing fold. We now have over 300 employees. We continue to remodel, giving the Dixie Highway Import Superstore a complete facelift in 2003 and Acura and Honda new designs in 2004. In 2005, we completely remodeled the Chrysler Dodge locations to add the Jeep franchise to our line-up of new vehicles. In 2006 we purchased land on Preston Highway and opened a large used car operation.
Growth continues today. Even though we suddenly lost Neil in April, 2007. And while no one can ever completely take his place, the Huffman family continues to provide quality transportation to the Kentuckiana poplulation.
